Last Thursday, Bay Area youth were blessed with a free concert from Outkast and The Goodie Mob. It was one of the few times people have had an opportunity to see these two stellar acts and label mates put it down together. Their performances were off the hook according to those who went to the concert. Unfortunately the event was marred by poor planning and a couple of major oversights.
The Outkast/Goodie Mob concert was sponsored by Coca Cola and attendants were issues private invitations. It wasn't open to the public. The problem was the venue-The Warfield Theater in SF decided to sell alcohol-which wasn't a wise thing to do for an event that was being put on for youth. It was bad enough that kids had come through already high and drunk. That was exasperated by the fact that many managed to get drinks while in the venue. Some kids were so drunk that they took on ugly attitudes which led to some women getting slapped and grabbed. Many began lighting up joints and at one point an empty Hennessy bottle was hurled on stage at Ceelo of Goodie Mob.
The group immediately left the stage and Ceelo made a personal appeal to the crowd to calm down. No more bottles were hurled, but the drinking continued. According to local record promoters attending the event, there were adults who actually making the alcohol purchases for the youth. When questioned as to why the venue would sell alcohol during a youth event, the reply was that they didn't want to impose limits on the adults in attendance. Considering how drunk many of these kids were, it may have been a worthwhile limit to impose.
Overall Coke gets props for putting on the concert as does Outkast and Goodie Mob who really wrecked shop. Bad marks for the Warfield for serving alcohol. Hopefully Coca Cola if they continue this series of shows will make sure that they are only Coke is served.
Speaking of the Goodie Mob, fans will soon have a chance to see them on the silver screen. They just finished filming a new flick entitled 'Mystery Men'. Here the usually positive rap group will take on the roles of thugged out villians. Also featured in the movie is rap star Pras. The movie is scheduled to drop sometime in August. Goodie Mob is also working on their own independent film entitled 'Radio 2000' which is a sci-fi type film about the world and its transition with mass media. Finally the group is gearing up for the release of their new album entitled 'World Party'. Featured artist include TLC, Lenny Kravits and Outkast.
